Unlike other tooth replacement options that replace just the crown of a missing tooth, dental implants replace both the root and the tooth. Because of this, they look, feel and function more like natural teeth, giving you the confidence to smile again and eat all your favorite foods without worrying about slippage or difficulty chewing. In addition, implants help preserve facial structure by stimulating bone growth in the jaw, preventing the bone loss that can occur when teeth are missing.
Dental Implants: A Permanent Solution for Missing Teeth
While dental implants are the preferred tooth replacement option for most patients, they may not be right for everyone. To determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants, a comprehensive dental exam is required. This will include X-rays and computer tomography (CT scans) of your mouth, jaw and gums. Your dental professional will also evaluate your overall health to ensure that you heal well after the procedure.
During the surgical procedure, the implant will be inserted into the jaw bone. The site will be covered with a temporary healing cap to allow the implant and bone to bond for several months, a process called osseointegration. After a few weeks, the implant will be ready to support a dental bridge or full denture that replicates your natural teeth. In some cases, a small number of titanium screws (called abutments) will be used to hold the restoration in place. These abutments are attached to the implant with dental cement.
